Going Gray…scratch that…SILVER!

O.M.G. My hair is really going gray…ummmm I mean silver! I decided a couple of months ago that I was tired of the incessant color, grow out, hide my head routine and that it was time to let my natural color shine! But to be really honest, I wasn’t sure if I could do it. I didn’t know if I’d freak out and start coloring again or if I’d be able to remain brave!

What really surprises me is that I’m fine. I’m not freaking out. I’m not feeling older. I’m not feeling self-conscious or worried at all. I’m actually enjoying it! I don’t know why I didn’t do this much earlier!

I started coloring my hair when I was about 30. I remember going to the salon and crying in my chair because I was going gray and I didn’t want to look old! My stylist was patient with me and gave me some golden highlights which were supposed to make me feel better and they did for a while. But very quickly I had mostly blondish hair and when I looked at photos I didn’t recognize myself!

So after that I decided to color my hair dark brown. I used an at home single process – Clairol #120. It was my go-to color for years and years.  Until this year. I’m going to be 50 this year and as you can see my hair is really silver so every time it would start to grow out my roots would be very visible. That combined with the fact that I needed to color every three weeks really began to wear on me!

On top of all of that, as a yoga instructor and motivational speaker I am always talking about authenticity, about loving yourself as you are, about being the REAL you….and I didn’t feel like I was doing that. I felt fake, pretend and like I was hiding behind my hair color. I don’t want to do that anymore.

So here I am in all my glory. My crown is totally silver. It feels like I’m stepping through a new threshhold….one that will burn away all the chaff. Into a place where My body, my mind and yes, even my hair will be gloriously me – ALL me. No additives, artificial colors or preservatives! LOL

Now my eyebrows…..that’s another story…..:)

Wild Carrot Herbals – You gotta try this!

I’ve been on a crusade lately. I want to eat food that is fresh from the garden or farmer’s market. I want to use Essential Oils as natural remedies for health and skin care and I want to use products for my body that are a combination of all things good: fresh, healthy, holistic and clean. And Wild Carrot Herbals is all of the above!

I first became acquainted with this company a few years ago while working in a yoga studio in Stanwood, WA. I fell in love with the Wild Rose Eye Cream and also their “Lord, my hands are so dry!” lotion.

So I looked them up online and found out that they offer a Sampler Pack by mail. For only $5 I received this great packet of trial size products.

17500186_10211012881170400_1594899006_o

In it I found good things like Luminous Lemon & Lavender Eye Brightening Cream and Gaia Goo Healing Salve (say what?) Borage Butter Cream (sounds like a dessert) and even Hemorrhoid Healing Salve – glad I don’t need that today. LOL.

Every email I received was signed with “Love and Blessings” from the owner and I found myself looking forward to checking my email to see what I would find there – THAT doesn’t happen very often with companies that email me – how about you?

In the world of Sacred Commerce they are doing everything right. They are a small family owned company in rural Oregon. Their packaging is made from recycled materials. They make everything from scratch and package it in small batches. Everything has an expiration date – because it’s FRESH and organic.

But more than anything I love this company because of the way they make me feel. I feel like I am a valued customer and that I am furthering the ethics that I choose to live by….by working with them…..AND that’s the kind of company I want to purchase from.

Why the name Wild Carrot?

from their website:

“According to the ‘Flower Essence Repertory’, by Patricia Kaminsky and Richard Katz, Queen Anne’s Lace flower essence harmonizes both ‘higher’ and ‘lower’ energies, so that one can stay connected with the Earth, yet also be emotionally clear and objective in one’s spiritual insight and vision. The Queen Anne’s Lace flower (aka Wild Carrot) helps to ground and stabilize, as well as to refine and sensitize the soul’s ‘clear-seeing.’

See you way clear to the Wild Carrot Herbals company. I promise you’ll be glad you did.

Peace, Love & Namaste – from Dawn.

How to Drive in SoCal

Did you know that there are new driving rules?  You won’t find these rules written down in your Driver’s Hand Book or online. You have to learn these rules by driving around in Southern California. Here they are in no particular order.

*These are not real rules. Just my frustrated venting. 🙂

  1. Drive as fast as you possibly can! Pretend this 6 lane highway is a video game. You can swerve in and out of cars, you can go 80 or more and there are no consequences for your reckless behavior! While waiting at a stop light please rev your engine and then peel out and race to the next light one block up and then slam on your brakes just before the intersection!
  2. When turning a corner you may turn into ANY lane you like! Normally if you are in the far right lane and you turn right you would turn into the far right lane in the direction you are going…but NOT here! Here you can change lanes at any time during your navigation from your original street to the next one. Have cars on either side of you? Pay them no attention….just move on over whenever you feel like it!
  3. Semi Trucks can go through lights of ANY color. Green Yellow, Red…who cares? Just go. You’re so damn big no one is going to stop you or get in your way no matter how long they might have to wait. (Especially if they drive something really small like a Mini Cooper!)
  4. Turn Signal? What’s that? We don’t use blinkers here in SoCal. Blinkers are for the weak and undecided. They don’t need to know where you want to go. It’s really none of their business anyway – Just GO. No room for you between cars? Don’t worry…just squeeze yourself right in there. They’ll make room.
  5. The following rule is two inches. Grannies leave several car lengths between their car and the car in front of them. REAL SoCal drivers leave only inches between their bumper and the license plate in front of them. You should be able to see what color eyes the driver in front of you has! Maybe if you get right up on their butt they will go faster?

I’m sure there are more rules that I haven’t learned yet. I’m doing my best not to be angry when I drive but it’s a challenge! Hope you got a little chuckle out of these rules. Only three more months and I’ll be learning the Georgia State Driving Rules! Have a great day y’all!

Looking for Love

My daughter loves elephants. I took her to Thailand last year. She met an elephant and fell in love. So from that day on elephants were her THING. She came back home and started to see elephants everywhere! Stuffed ones at Walmart, porcelain statues, funky elephant T shirts, cell phone covers, jewelry and even elephant candle holders!

This phenomenon may have happened to you as well. You want a boat – so all you see are boats everywhere you look. You want a puppy and it seems like your Facebook feed fills up immediately with people giving them away. Or you need a dining room table and a perfect one magically appears on craigslist for free!

Funny things happen when we desire something. It’s as though the mere act of focussing our attention makes there be more of that thing! It’s as though we are pulling those items closer with our metal power. Imagine Magneto from the Xmen –  arms outstretched pulling  everything he desires toward him!  But it’s no super power. It’s real. Our mind focusses on what we want and brings it to our attention and then our attention expands.

I’ve been focusing my energy on Love lately. I want more love in my life. I want my kids to have it. I want it to be my go-to reaction and I want others to make this choice too. So I’m not surprised that I see love everywhere. I see hearts in plants, the word LOVE scrawled on walls, Love poetry, graffiti and even in the trunks of trees. Was all this LOVE here before and I didn’t notice it? Did my “looking for it” cause the Universe to create more of it or am I just crazy?

Well, I might be a little bit crazy but the truth is that all this LOVE has been here all the time. I didn’t create it, I am just more aware of it now than ever. Maybe because I need it or I choose to believe in it. Maybe because I share it with everyone and maybe even because I am a part of it.

I believe that we are part of a wonderful creation. I believe that we share energy with everyone and everything around us and I believe that what we focus on expands. I know people who watch the evening news every day and all they see in the world is fear and worry. I know people who are so unhappy with their reality that they stay high most of the time. I know people who are so afraid that they carry around not one but two guns!

So choose your focus…..set your attention….I challenge you to choose something good like love, hope, forgiveness or health and see what happens. Let me know how what you are looking for expands for you!

Trying On Guard!

I get sick EVERY time I fly. It never fails. With the enclosed space, the re-circulated air and 150 bodies – some of which are carrying nasty bacteria – I’m usually a goner. Within a few days of flying my throat gets itchy, my eyes water, I start sneezing and the misery sets in.

About a month ago I had a flight planned from California to New York for Valentines weekend. My boyfriend was being trained for a new job and he wanted to show me the big city! The problem was that he had been sick for a few days and I was really dreading coming down with his bug.

(That’s me in the middle being overrun by two BIG guys on either side!)

As a Yoga Instructor and Health/Wellness Advocate I always try to use products that are holistic and pure which is getting more difficult these days. I don’t like it when I buy cough drops and there are ingredients that I can’t pronounce on the label! I want to use products that are pure and simple and effective! It’s the same principle as clean eating – no chemicals, no by-products and simple ingredients please.

So I decided to try something new. I bought some On Guard from a friend of mine. On Guard is an essential oil that you can use topically or take internally to boost your immune system and I was willing to try anything!

During the trip I used On Guard like perfume. I dotted a little under each ear, on my wrists and at the base of my neck. I used one or two drops each application. My boyfriend and I hadn’t seen each other for far too long and with the extra incentive of Valentines Day I knew there would be at least some Kissing!!!! 🙂

16602120_10210653613988945_8028323953223403824_o.jpg

(Proof of kissing.)

The trip was wonderful. I loved touring New York City even with the rain and snow. Even my flights went smoothly – which is a feat when flying all the way across the country! I returned home and began waiting to see if the sniffles would set it……and I waited……and waited……and waited…and almost a month later I still haven’t been sick!

So, if you’re like me and you are prone to picking up every sniffle going around, if you work in a school or daycare environment, If you are a nurse, If you fly a lot, If you have kids who get sick often, give On Guard a try. It worked better than I imagined. It’s the newest item in my arsenal of Good Stuff!

If you are interested in learning more about On Guard or any of the other doTerra products please visit my website and have a look! If you find something you like, you can have your choices shipped directly to your home! There are several On Guard products that can be used in your laundry, to sanitize your kitchen or even brush your teeth!

Americas Religion – Consumerism

No one NEEDS three sets of dishes. No one needs “fancy” silverware, every day silver and picnic silverware too. Most of us have more clothes than we need and some of us even have clothes in our closets with the tags still on them!  No one needs all of that pressure to purchase, decorate and consume! What we need is to learn how to live with less. LOTS less.

I feel comfortable speaking on this subject because that used to be me. I wanted to be Martha Stewart. I loved everything she did. I bought transfer ware plates because she had them. I painted my rooms in muted shades because that is what she showed in her magazine. Hell, I even raised a couple of Arucana Chickens to get those coveted blue and green eggs that she raved about!

I had it bad folks! Mix my Need for More, More, More with my Need for Perfectionism and I was a hot mess! At one point I had 7 Christmas trees in my house – ALL during the same Holiday Season! I was so busy trying to be the perfect, wife, mom, home-maker, PTA member, and Church Lady that I lost site of what was the most important thing of all – my sanity! How can you stay sane when everyone is constantly telling you that enough is NOT enough?

Maybe it’s time we stop trying to do it all, Be it all, and have it all. Maybe it’s time that we say that it’s ok to live with less. That it’s ok to not be upgrading EVERY stinking time one is available or advertised on TV. I know I’m ready. How about you? Are you ready to say “enough” to all of the pressure to be perfect and stop trying to buy your way to happiness?

There are lots of people out there today sharing this message. You can check out the Minimalists. They have a similar message. Here’s what I’m doing.

  1. Stop buying so much crap. Do I NEED this or do I just WANT it?
  2. Get rid of what you don’t use. Clothes, shoes, kitchen stuff.
  3. Count your Blessings. Be more aware of the good stuff in your life.
  4. Be more Present. In THIS moment. Not the future or past.
  5. Don’t let others tell you what you need. You are the expert on that.

Life is NOT about stuff folks. Stuff just gets in the way. Have enough to be useful and comfortable but if you don’t wear it, touch it or love it – It needs to go.

It’s ok to say NO. YOU are enough without all the STUFF.

I Love America.

Occasionally you have one of those moments. A moment that catches your breath and makes you stop in place. A moment that cuts through everything that is going on in your world. A moment that stops time.

The first thing I saw as I walked up into the main concourse of Grand Central Station in New York City was our American flag. It literally stopped me in my tracks. My heart caught in my chest and all of a sudden, I felt a wash of pride for our country.

I was rather surprised because I haven’t been feeling all that proud lately. I’ve been feeling rough around the edges and bruised.  I’ve started avoiding the internet and news channels. My intention is not to stick my head in the sand but to maintain my sanity.

It’s scary that we have allowed our differences to divide us so deeply. We have allowed fear and anger to separate us into warring factions. Our frustrations are being channeled into name calling and I believe we have lost sight of how great our nation truly is.

I believe that we have much more in common than we realize. And I believe we all want the same things. We want to feel safe. We want freedom to pray (or not pray) as we see fit. We want the chance to create a life of opportunity for ourselves and our children. We don’t want anyone to tell us who we can love.  And we all want to be heard.

I see us as a great big family!  And our beautiful American family was on display this weekend in New York City!  A Mennonite family in home-made dresses going to see the Statue of Liberty. An Italian man surrounded by his playing grandchildren. A born-and-bred N’Yawka holding a door for me. A man on the subway playing his guitar and singing about politics. Men in long, heavy dreads sloshing through the snow. A Jewish family riding home from a protest.

As a family it’s our responsibility to take care of each other. Sure, some of us are loud and irritating. Some of us are shy. Some of us always want to wrestle and fight….and some of us are peacemakers. We all have a place in our family. No is left out. You belong, I belong and we all have to do our part in this family so we can feel proud of what we accomplish.

This country was founded by a group of determined, intelligent bad asses who weren’t going to take no for an answer. They knew we were great before we knew it! They knew our ideals were worth fighting for. They knew that “WE the People” had strength and a common purpose. Our flag represents all of that hard work, our heritage and our history.

We may not always agree how to get there – but we will figure it out together. We have survived rough patches in the past. We have made mistakes – we all do. We have apologized. We have fought and given mercy. We are strong and mighty and have the power to kick ass.

So, today I’m proud to be an American. I still feel a bit shaky but I love us. I love who we are and who we can be. I love our beautiful land. I love our many colors but most of all I love our hearts. Because we all want what is best for us – we just sometimes disagree on what that is.

As I rode the subway out-of-town I couldn’t help but start to sing quietly that old Woody Guthrie song.

“This land is your land This land is my land
From California to the New York island;
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and Me.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway:
I saw below me that golden valley:
This land was made for you and me.

I’ve roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said “No Trespassing.”
But on the other side it didn’t say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.”

Happy Valentines Day America!
